NIC BALLARA

Nic Ballara is a New Zealand Registered Architect (NZRAB) with over 25 years of professional experience delivering bespoke homes, multi-unit residential developments, and innovative housing solutions throughout New Zealand. A member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), Nic founded The Pōneke Company in 2020 to create an architectural practice focused on progressive residential design, thoughtful urban development, and emerging methods of construction.

Nic's portfolio spans architecturally designed homes on challenging sites, medium- and high-density housing, apartment developments, and large-scale residential master planning. His work combines strong design thinking with a practical understanding of planning, construction, procurement, and project delivery, allowing him to guide projects from early feasibility through to completion. Whether working with private homeowners, developers, contractors, or funding partners, Nic is recognised for balancing design quality with commercial reality.

Alongside his architectural work, Nic has developed particular expertise in modular construction and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA). Working with local and international manufacturers, engineers, and construction teams, he has helped develop repeatable housing systems that improve efficiency, build quality, and sustainability while maintaining a strong architectural focus. This experience continues to inform many of the practice's larger residential and development projects.

One of the defining projects in Nic's career is the 45° House, featured on Grand Designs New Zealand. Built on a steep Wellington hillside, the home is suspended using rock anchors and structural steel cables, demonstrating an innovative response to an exceptionally challenging site. The project reflects Nic's belief that technical constraints should inspire better architecture rather than limit it.

Today, Nic’s experience spans bespoke homes, urban infill developments, apartment buildings, and larger residential communities throughout New Zealand.  Every project is shaped by its site, landscape, and community, creating buildings that are both distinctive and enduring. A defining characteristic of Nic's approach is his ability to work collaboratively across the entire development process. Beyond architectural design, he regularly advises on development feasibility, planning strategy, consultant coordination, procurement, construction methodology, and project delivery. This broader understanding enables clients to make informed decisions while maintaining the integrity of the architectural vision from concept through to completion.

Outside of managing the practice, Nic draws inspiration from diverse experiences, whether running along Wellington’s scenic trails, surfing New Zealand’s iconic beaches, or enjoying culinary adventures with his wife. These experiences shape the culture of The Pōneke Company, fostering creativity, curiosity, and a genuine appreciation for thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and connection.
