The Pōneke Company is a future-focused architecture practice founded by New Zealand Registered Architect Nic Ballara, creating thoughtful, high-quality spaces for the way we live today and tomorrow.

The Pōneke Company is named after the Māori transliteration of “Port Nic” - an early settler reference to Port Nicholson, now Wellington. The name reflects a connection to place, innovation, and the evolving needs of Aotearoa’s communities.

Established in 2020 following Nic’s earlier practice, Pōneke Architects, The Pōneke Company brings over 25 years of architectural experience to projects throughout New Zealand. The practice specialises in creating considered responses to complex sites, evolving housing needs, and changing construction methods - delivering architecture that balances design quality, technical performance, and real-world delivery.

The practice works across three key areas: Modular Solutions, Urban Living, and Bespoke Homes.

Through Modular Solutions, The Pōneke Company explores new approaches to construction, including Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), prefabrication, and efficient housing delivery models. Through Urban Living, the practice designs apartments and medium- to high-density developments that make better use of land while creating connected, liveable communities. Through Bespoke Homes, the practice creates highly considered residences that respond to unique sites, landscapes, and individual lifestyles.

Working throughout New Zealand, including Wellington, Queenstown, Hawke’s Bay, Hamilton, and Auckland, The Pōneke Company delivers projects ranging from challenging-site homes and high-end residences through to multi-unit developments and innovative housing solutions.

Led by Nic Ballara, a New Zealand Registered Architect and NZIA member, the practice combines architectural ambition with practical delivery. From the Grand Designs New Zealand featured 45 Degree House, which transformed a steep and challenging Wellington site, to complex urban developments and innovative housing projects, The Pōneke Company specialises in turning constraints into opportunities for exceptional design.
