Perched above the breathtaking Wellington Harbour entrance, Karaka Bay Horizon embraces its commanding location while navigating the complex interplay of design aspirations and strict planning regulations. The original brief envisioned a new dwelling on the upper portion of the site with access to a newly created plot to the rear. However, stringent planning constraints necessitated a creative solution: a design blending 50% new build with alterations to the existing structure.

The existing building envelope had to be retained, presenting challenges that were amplified by the driveway's northern approach and the imposition of height-plane restrictions to the south. Despite these limitations, the project succeeds in delivering a striking yet harmonious presence. On the west-facing streetscape, the design employs a cohesive palette of materials and a thoughtful interplay of horizontal and vertical forms.

A grounded base of garage, decking, and open-plan living spaces unfolds into a bold, vertical upper level clad in Euroline metal. This layering of forms not only addresses functional needs but also introduces architectural depth and dynamism. By carefully integrating these elements, the design avoids the overplayed "modernist-by-numbers" aesthetic often seen in similar developments, instead offering a contemporary yet contextually sensitive addition to the suburban setting.

Internally, the home capitalises on its elevated position, framing expansive views of the harbour while maximising natural light and connections to outdoor spaces. The result is a dwelling that balances innovation with respect for its surroundings, celebrating the interplay of form, function, and landscape.
